Joan was lucky in her many friends who she met in a variety of different contexts. Graham
Gavert was an American schoolboy studying in Cambridge when he stopped to look in at
the studio during a bicycle ride to Grantchester. He later brought his mother, Gloria, to
visit Joan, and the Gaverts remained firm friends for the rest of Joan's life. They even
persuaded her to make her one and only trip to the USA, to visit them in Connecticut.
